Default Generic Model by Face - Cut Host

I could swear that this worked before, but maybe I am just nuts. If I start with the Generic Model by Face template, shouldn't I be able to cut the host object, using a Void Extrusion? I am trying to build a sink that will cut it's own hole in the counter top.

Yes you can certainly do this. All our sinks are setup this way. When using the cut geometry tool to tell the void to cut the face extrusion, hover over the top edge of the void first to select it and then select the extrusion.

To constrain the void depth to the extrusion depth revit won't actually allow you to select the bottom face of the extrusion as an alignment point. As such drag the bottom edge of the extrusion to align with the void extrusion and then lock it.

    My Spot,

I can't figure out what I am doing wrong here. I have attached a simple example. The "sink" family (still in the Generic Model category) has one void that is set to cut it's host, but when placed in a counter top, nothing is cut. It does cut if I place it in a wall or a floor.

Any idea what I did wrong?

    Just to clarify:

Voids in a face based family, when being nested into another family, will cut any solid object. But if you just create a void in a face based family and load it into your project, it will only cut elements that can host, like walls, floors, roofs. Because the countertop can't actually host an element, the void won't cut it.

This works if you nest the "Simple Sink" directly in to the counter top family.

Its for this reason we do all our bences/counter tops as floors. We find that their shapes are so custom that this is the best method anyway. We just have a filter setup that turns them off in our slab plans and schedules...
