    For the US in the AEC industries, the NCS is quickly becoming the de facto. As for other industries (I saw someone mentioned P&ID above), your best bet is BIM. It's also worth noting that if you beyond vanilla AutoCAD into the verticals, you get many industry standards straight from the source.

    I, too, work in the civil field and find the NCS a bit cumbersome and hard to adapt to my work. I have found a couple of sites you might want to check out:

    the CADD/GIS Technology Center has a really comprehensive A/E/C CADD Standard;
    the GSA Public Buildings Service has some guidelines in their PBS CADD Standards;
    finally, you might try your local county or state web sites for information.
