Default Adding object data to a feature source

Excuse me if I dont get the lingo down, I'm self taught in the ways of GIS.

But, how do I add a new column to the table of a feature source?

I want to have a main drawing that houses the feature source (in this case, land parcels for a LARGE portion of the county). Then have other drawings that also have the land parcels, but are styled to have all the pertinent info. such as title blocks, text, colors, so on so on. I know how to check it out, to make changes to the 'linework' and save that back to the .shp file. I also know how to add object data to the feature, by going to table, and typing away.

But I dont know how to make a whole new column to the object data. Any suggestions??

    Hope that explanation makes sense.

Object Data is for standard AutoCAD objects, if you used the mapimport command to import the shp file and create object data then just open the OD table with the map pull down menu and edit the table.
If you used Data Connect to "Connect" to the shp file you can try editting the schema by going to the Map Explorer tab of the map task pane and select edit schema from the tools there, you need to expand the shp schema all the way down to the feature part then select "New Feature/property" in the schema editor.

Thanks Murph for the suggestion. I want to do what you mentioned secondly. Connect to the shp file, and be able to edit and add to the shp data file.

Anyway, I gave it a try and I got the following message.

"Apply schema on a single shp is not allowed"

Still trying to figure this one out. Thanks again for the suggestion.

I think I can simplify my question.

How do I add data to a .shp file?

Your shape connection has to be to a folder not a single file, then export the current schema to that folder, create a new shp schema, delete the Default schema it creates and import the schema you exported. (all of this in with the schema editor) then edit the schema to add a new property (a new field) set the type and the length or any other parameters as needed. Now do a bulk copy to the new shp schema.
