Default How to: Map 3D DWG render matl's to Revit/MR materials

Can anyone shed some light on a successful method of mapping 3D DWG rendering materials to RAC09 // Mental Ray materials.

Manufacturer's content is still much more common in the DWG format, but importing it into Revit families, and placing in a project to be rendered does not yield good results.

Many times the DWG file has only two layers (0 and ASHADE), so I'm at a loss...

    TIA
    Graham

    Graham,

You'll need to create and assign layers in the DWG that correspond to each material you want. Then in Revit, you assign the MR materials to the layers via Settings > Object Styles... > Imported Categories.

    HTH.

I don't use ACAD except when I have to, so am not terribly familiar...

The plumbing fixtures I am working on are block referenced onto Layer 0, so I assume they should be exploded, and then the resulting polymeshes and faces placed on separate layers? Color by layer, etc.

    What a PITA

It's too bad the Factory doesn't come up with an easier solution, say through the Labs, or as an Extension. There is a lot of acceptable content that could be morphed into true RFA's.

    Thanks for the advice.

Yes. And as far as I know, that's the only way to do it.
