Default Can't Resize object by changing dimension

Evening - new user, working on 2009 tutorials. I want to change the size of a floor by selecting dimensions and entering new values, which has worked before. Now when I select the dimension a "Dimension Text" dialog box appears? The dimensions are not locked and I don't know how to change the value so the geometry changes with it?

    Thanks,
    Mike

To change a dimension in Revit you must select the object the dimension is referencing. That said, floors are sketch based objects and you won't be able to change the dimension of the slab unless you are in sketch mode.
Select the slab, click 'edit' on the options bar, select the line in the sketch you want to change and then you can change the blue dimension text that appears as a temporary dimension.
It might seem a little clumsy at this stage but it gets easier as you start to understand the way things work.

Sounds like you're selecting the dimension itself, rather than the object. RAC 2009 added the new feature of dimension text overrides, which you get to by selecting the dimension itself and then clicking on the dimension text.

To my knowledge, I don't think we've ever been able to change a dimension value by clicking on the dimension itself. You've always had to click on the actual object, and then your dimensions will either change to small blue text (indicating you can change the value there directly), or sometimes you have to click on the Activate Dimensions button at the top.

I just checked in RAC 2008 and I was right. In previous versions, if you click on the dimension itself, the whole thing just highlights in red (including the text). You can edit anything there. If you select the actual object, the dimension text turns blue and then you can change the value.

I think I need to clarify, I have done this before in the Revit Tutorial and it worked. What the exercise says is to insert a floor. So from the Basics I choose floor, then lines, then rectangle. I am in sketch mode, the grids are greyed out. I lay out a rectangul for my floor, add dimensions to 2 opposite corners.

Now the exercise says: resize the floors by changing its dimensions, (this has worked on previous exercises) but in this one I get the dimension text dialog box instead of the the box for the actual dimension.

    Any thoughts?

    Thanks,
    Mike

The dimensions need to be active (blue color) for you to change them. IF they are black, then selecting them will get the Text dialog box. If they are black, you'll need to select the sketch line you want to move, then the blue dimension, to move the line by changing a dimension.

Scott is correct. I cannot recall ever being able to change a dimension value merely by clicking on the dimension itself. You must always click on the thing you want to move, which will either activate the dimension so you can change it, or sometimes you might have to click on Activate Dimensions above. You can only change dimensions that are blue and have very small text (same size as temp dimensions).

This has been the case since at least 6.1 back in 2004 as far as I know.
