SHX TO TTF CONVERSION/COMPARISON

Is there a tool out there that at least will let me compare SHX fonts to TTF fonts.
i gather that its impossible to convert them since they are shape files.
we are wasting a ton of time with complaints from architects that our fonts dont match.
