    Default Worksharing, Relinquishing elements

I was curious is there a away to relinquish elements that a user has locked up in the central file, if there computer and login have been delete for the network? I guess I am asking is there a way to get into the central file and relinquish elements without going through the user login. Kind of a Revit administrator.

    Yes this can be done.

After you open Revit, under Options change the user name to the required name (the one who is holding elements). Close and reopen Revit, open the problem file, save to central - relinquishing all, close the file and change the user name back (don't forget to change it back). Exit Revit.

You learn the hard way (Sorry about that, I couldn't resist) Save it to a new local, and release what you can, then change your user name back, and open a new local and save to central again.

On our network, it won't let me change the name in the middle of a session. I actually make a NEW local to deal with the changed name. Do you by chance have network administrative rights?

check that off the list. already done that. I'm thinking there ought to be a better more secure way to prevent this type of thing from happening.

Can't save no matter what I try I'm stuck in a loop, I can't save to a new local and I can't change the username becuase there are changes that need to be saved.

I do have more rights than normal, I'm told, but I'm not sure if that includes network admin. I have full access to anything to do with our projects and families as I'm the one that set everything up for our office. Wonder how you prevent a user from changing the Revit user name in the middle of a session, cause I'd sure like to prevent me from doing that ever again.

I was thinking my last resort now was restore a back up from the beginning of the day and run my journal file on it, but was hoping for a better way as I have a gut feeling the journal file isn't going to end well.

Don't know what to tell you. I have never tried changing my user name in the middle of a session before. I've always STC, th]en get out of the project, and done it that way.

I dont believe you CAN change it while a file is opened. Itll tell you that the file belongs to someone else. At least, it used too....
