    Default rendering materials

I've got the render material of my pipes/structures to be concrete (the default) how do i get the parts to look right when i'm looking at 3dorbit views? all i'm seeing is the rotated wire frame.

Change your visibility state. You'll need to render the drawing to get the materials. If you just want a shaded effect you can use one of the shade settings.
