Default Can't set a sweep profile to a Family Type parameter?

I have created a stone window sill profile with several different sizes. I loaded this family into a window family, created a sweep, and used one of the sill profile types as the sweep profile. Now when I click on that sweep and look at its properties, there is a property for the profile family type, but there is no = box next to it. I tried creating a Family Type : Profiles parameter in the window family, and it shows the sill profiles loaded into the window family, but it doesn't affect that window sill sweep when I change it, because the sweep still isn't associated with that parameter.

    What am I missing here?

When I click on the sweep element in the family, and look at its parameters, under Profile, the profile family is the only parameter that does NOT have the Associate Parameter button next to it.

Would it be counter productive for you you to just create a sweep for each profile and use visibility parameters to constrain them to their respective family types?

I don't like that idea at all. The profile for the stone sill I'm using has probably 20 different sizes (same shape, just varying depths and heights), with a type catalog alongside the family. I didn't load all the profile sizes into the window family, but I did load 3 or 4 of them.

Doing a separate sweep for each sill size seems pretty counter-productive and would bloat the family quite a bit, I think. That sort of defeats the purpose of making a family parametric.

    Patrick,

Why don't you create the stone sill with its profile as a different family and add parameter to change its height and depth and then just nest the parametric stone sill instead of just the profiles?

blahhh the family already had a nested window family, I was trying to avoid nesting another family.

Also, I have already set up the profile with parameters for the dimensions of stock-sized pieces, and also created a type catalog to go along with it.

These are Prairie Stone cast stone pieces I'm referring to BTW. Their pieces typically come in 4, 6, or 8" nominal bed depths, and 4, 6, or 8" heights. The window sill pieces come in 4, 6, 8, 12, and 16" depths, plus a 3" height. I had created a profile for the window sill with a type catalog covering all 18 available sizes.

That's why I didn't want to bother created a separate family for the sill with a bunch of different types there. I'd rather just have the family pull the size from the loaded profile.

I hear what your saying too! I made up some Trench drains, loaded in the nice detail component, locked all the profile lines to it & made it so that i could change the detail family around. Works (or more to the point it doesn't work) just like yours!
