Default mtext centered grippng extents moves mtext

Anyone noticed that if you have a body of mtext with the origin set to middle center, and the format set to centered, if you pull the corner grips now it moves off center? It used to get smaller from both sides and stay in place.

This is an annoyance since I often place text on axes (supposed to be plural of axis, can't spell).

Is there a variable I can set here?

Just open the editor and use the ruler to change the width. Insertion point stays the same. You can now use the grips to set the location of the corners which you couldn't do before with center justification.
