Cool Adding your professional seal for use in Design Review

Thanks to Scott Sheppard at Autodesk for putting me on the right track.

This will allow Design Review users to create a Symbol in Design Review that contains their professional seal and signature.

You have two methods that you can use to create the seal.

Option 1: Creating the seal using a scanned raster image
Get a clean sheet of white paper, get a good load of ink on your stamp, and place your seal on the paper. Have the engineer sign the stamp example with a color pen of a different color than then ink used for the stamp. Scan the image.

In an image editing program, remove the white area with the Magic wand tool and make the image transparent as much as possible. Save the image in PNG format, a high-quality format that allows transparency.

Import the image into AutoCAD, and ensure that the image is scaled to the size of the original on-paper seal; set your units to ensure that you've got this worked out. Use the Transparency command and turn On transparency. The image should appear transparent. Set Imageframe to 0 or 2 so the border around the image won't appear when you print to DWF. Use the Plot command, and print the image to a DWF file.

Option 2: Creating the seal in AutoCAD
If you like, you can draw up the graphics of the seal in AutoCAD (again, at the same size as the actual physical stamp). Import the signature of the professional using the method described above. Plot the combined seal and signature to DWF.

Creating the Symbol for the seal in Design Review
Find the Symbol tool and click the drop-down for Create Catalog. Navigate to where you saved your DWF with seal and signature in it. Choose the Import each sheet as a Symbol option.

You have now created a symbol you can place on each page that contains your professional seal

To place your professional seal, click the Symbol tool and place the symbol on each sheet. You must do this for every sheet.

You can also create catalogues that have multiple symbols in one shot by placing all symbols, seals, stamps, etc. as blocks in an Autocad dwg and publishing to dwf w/ block template created via publish options. Then when creating symbol catalogue, use the "Import each object on sheets as a symbol" option. This can be a little squirrely as you have to be very careful about what block properties you import - especially the "name" property because if you don't you will not be able to tell DR to use block names as symbol names and all symbols will have same name assigned with an incremented suffix (Symbol1, Symbol2, etc) Also there are issues with memory images being confused if both DR and ACAD are open at the same time (you may think you're creating a new dwf or block template file, but info in memory says file exists and overwrite does not occur, etc.)
However, as mentioned in other posts, what is really needed are custom STAMPS, not symbols. As stamps are editiable, we could include things like dates and checks in checkboxes, etc (possibly via use of fields in stamp definition?) I'm thinking more about "Revise and Resubmit" "Approved as Noted" type stamps where firm logo and the approval options are all inculded in one stamp and the reviewer just checks off appropriate checkbox and fills in a date.
    Thanks,
    Mike

Wouldn't such a signed stamp be invalid, since anybody could assign it to a drawing, not just the engineer? I think its a good idea with just the stamp as that leaves the control still in the engineers hands ("What do you mean, I authorized that change? I wasn't even in the country at the time!")

Many jurisdictions are now dealing with electronic sealing of documents created by professionals. A mere image of a seal and/or signature may not be permitted or recommended without an accompanying digital signature which ensures that the drawing has not been altered since its creation by the author. So if you are planning to use electronic sealing, make sure you check with your professional association to see if they have regulations or guidance on the matter.
