    Default Revision Tracking....

Can someone explain clearly the new 'Revision tracking' with a 'Tutorial'?
The help file doesn't explain with detail on the difference between 'Numbering method by Project' and 'Numbering method by Sheet'.

In normal practice, revisions are numbered on Sheet basis and not on Project basis.

Anyone out there who understands this better?

There is a tutorial on this under the " Learning New Autodesk Revit 7.0 Features. "

If you select to number by project, the revisions are numbered according to the sequence of revisions in the Revisions dialog box. For example, if the active revision is number 1, all tags and schedules display the numeral 1. If you select to number by sheet, the revisions are numbered according to the sequence in which they are added to a sheet.

I really find the new revision setup quite strange in its setup.

You must place a revision cloud on a sheet in order for it to display in the revisions box. Then if you delete it you lose your revision information. This would mean you would have to leave all your revision clouding on each sheet for it to display??

In other words, by the end of a project i think all i could see would be a mass of clouding!! Sometimes the same area might be reviewed multiple times so you would need to place revision clouds over the top of each other to get it to show previous revisions?

I really hope this is not the case and my brain just wasn't functioning when i was looking at this yesterday...

You can turn the clouds off in the visibility overrides and the legend will remain filled out.

However, what if you still want to display the latest clouding? Which typically what we do.

a change is clouded and issued.

Another change is made, previous clouding removed, new clouding added and a new revision note added to the revisions...

I've seen it done both ways. Where you have revision 1 on A1 which is different than revision 1 on A2. This is by Sheet. The other way is revision 1 in the project is the same revision throughout the entire set of construction documents.

    I hope this helps.

In the Revisions dialog on the right column is the visibility column. Turn all previous revision visibilities off and leave the current one on.
I like the revision concept very much, but is flawed in it's delivery. I get the feeling not much research was done in this area before implementation.

Another methodolgy of ours is to use numbers pre-building approval and then use letters after that. Is this possible?

That's very similar to how we do it.
But we use letters for prelim/design and then switch to numbers after the documents have been issued for construction. As far as I know this is currently not possible. We should have the ability to letter/number revisions at our own discretion.

Of this assumption I'm certain you are wrong. Why do you suppose it has taken till release 7 to offer a comprehensive revision tool? Precisely because "you" say Tomahto and I say Tomayto... This is one of many architectural issues that are quite splintered in practice.
