    Default Worksets & Relinquishing

Maybe I'm missing something here. I don't know.

Say I'm working in a model with another user and he has ownership of 3 of the 5 worksets and I have ownership of the other 2. Is it possible for him (or me for that matter) to relinquish a single workset without having to relinquish all of them? I've been trying to find a way to do it but haven't found it yet. I could be just blind or maybe I missed a button.

Sure enough. Simply open the Worksets dialog, click on the workset you want to relinquish, and click the Non-Editable button. A message will pop up saying you will remain the borrower of whatever elements you changed on that workset. Then simply Sync with Central and keep the User Created Worksets box unchecked so that your other checked-out worksets will remain checked out.

Curious, though, with element borrowing, why do you feel the need to have different people check out entire worksets?

It seemed like it might help when we run into the situation where a second user needs to edit multiple things on a workset owned by the first user. It gets real annoying when user two has to request 45 items on a workset and user one just ignores all the requests because "It takes too much time to click on every one of those requests, I've got other things to do."

Worksharing Monitor might help a bit.......sounds like group communication ( IM program ) also might help, and a good strategy for "who-is-doing-what-where-why-and-when", along with a weekly
team meeting to get evryone on the same page would come in handy.....

You didn't really answer Patrick's question, though. If user 1 did NOT check out the entire workset, user 2 wouldn't NEED to request things that #1 owns. Element Borrowing lets you borrow only what you are actually editing.

    @Dave - Maybe that's the answer then.

@Cliff - I agree. Proper communication, good strategy and weekly meetings would be the way to go. I pushed for it VERY hard. Unfortunately, I don't get to make that call. "Upper" management feels it's a waste of time. You know how it goes. We say "We're doing BIM" but in reality "we" don't know what that means outside of owning a box that says Revit on it.

We never have anyone take "full control" of a workset....reason being lets say someone is working on casework and takes full control....anything that the casework is hosted to is borrowed if its in another workset. So if someone was working on walls they would be constantly asking for someone to sync...

Hard to see how any of those could be considered a waste of time.
In fact, I think that's one of the biggest benefits of BIM.
BIM forces you to communicate better.

And MP's right, taking full control of a workset was no longer necessary after about Revit version 8.1

Re: taking full control of workset

These workset-snatchers are also prone to saving without relinquishing, then leaving for the day!

    Re: weekly meetings

If you can't get time for meetings from management, you can at least get an instant messenger. You can carry on a meeting of sorts all day long, without the boss suspecting a thing!

Agreed. We actually use Skype between our 3 offices for IM. Works great--no goofy cameras though..........
