So, just to compare the steps:

Manage...Materials....Render Appearance tab...Replace button...click a different material from the Library preview grid...click OK...and then Revit locks up and goes all white on you...

Doesnt' seem to matter which preview or list method I pick in the Autodesk Library dialog. It definitely seems only connected to the "Swatch Shape and Render Quality" dropdown to the right of the preview image. And even then, it doesn't seem to matter which Swatch Shape I pick, but the only one that won't crash is when I choose the DRAFT quality. Both Medium and High quality crash for me. Oddly, after it loads the preview in Draft view, then I can change it to High quality and it doesn't crash.

Methinks something odd is going on...
just for the record i'm not getting this problem on 32 bit win xp

That's odd indeed. I can click any of the three and it fixes the session. It's the same issue expressed differently, yours is more annoying than mine I should think. Sounds like 64bit could be the issue. And yes, that arrow is discreet!!!!!!!!!!

For the record, my spec is:
    Dell Precision T5500
    Windows 7 64bit
    Dual Quad core X5550 @ 2.67GHz
    6GB RAM
    NVIDIA Quadro FX1800 dv157.94
    Dual Monitor

    For the record, and comparison...

    @Xi M Tower:
    Asus P6T Mobo
    Intel i7 960 (3.46 GHz Turboboost)
    12 GB Patriot DDR3
    Nvidia Quadro FX3800 - Driver 197.59
    Windows 7 Professional 64 bit
Single Samsung monitor- but it's a 27" monster...

Impressive machine, but can you model a family such that it has a flexible angle in it when brought in to a project? I.E.: for a roof truss for a house or for a "ripped" 2 x member or for anything else that is not square where the angled side can rotate, pivot or stretch. I can achieve this in the family, but when brought into the project, it won't move. Any luck? or suggestions?

Tested as described above on one of my computers - no crashes. For me, everything works as it should.

    EP6550 Duo Core 2.33 Ghz
    4 GB DDR2 ram
    ATI X1650 Raedon Video Card
    Win7 64bit
HWA off or on same result
    50MB Model size

I will test on the other one and report any crashes

    Cheers,

    Ian

A gentleman at our office found a semi solution to the crashing when you select a material. Before you go into the replace command of the material, change the preview render quality to Draft Quality it should allow to continue without any errors. I have attached an image of what I am talking about.

See if this will fix your problem at this time.

That's what I've been doing. Would be nice to get a hotfix though.

I am been having similar issues with a file that I just upgraded from 2009 (upgraded to 2010 first and with an audit done before each upgrade). The file was upgraded for rendering purposes only, and I have had crashes in the material editor, 3D views and when printing a PDF!

I am wondering if people having problems with the material editor are working in upgaded files, or files that where started in 2011? Could this be the problem?

    Regards,
    Shaun Rudd
