Each upgrade is a major investment for us.

That's one reason for subscription, you spread the cost annually instead of one lump sum. And you get the added benefit of using the most current software. However, I havn't been able to convince my supervisors of this. They still fear the "impact" of an upgrade. A lot of users don't like/handle change very well. But, when you only upgrade every 3-4 years, the changes are more significant. I believe that if you plan an upgrade well, you can greatly minimize the impact for users.

I agree totally. Especially looking at releases 04 and 05. The curve between these two softwares is fairly minimal. Were I you I would gather the data to prove the point and they'll probably see the cost savings due to training time right away. Good luck!

I do agree that most users find an upgrade difficult but youre right in your thinking that its not cheaper to upgrade only every 3 to 4 years. My company has always bought the newest version of autocad as soon as it became available just for the simple fact they got burned in the transition from R14 to 2000. they waited for a couple of years before they upgraded and the cost in both downtimw for training nad the cost of the software itself was horrendus. Since then theyve always bought the new version when it came out , even if we never use it, its still cheaper in the long run.
