Question Connecting to an external database

I'm trying to find the best way connect to an external database. I know how to write to an excell or .csv file but want to transfer revised information in a database to update attributed blocks in a drawing. I also understand that block handles could be useful to find AutoCAD objects. I'm an intermediated AutoLISP programmer and don't know VBA well. Would VBA better? Any feedback is appriciated.

I am looking for information on populating block attributes from a database file (Excel). I have blocks that I routinely enter into drawings. The Attribute data has already been entered into Excel by the secretary. I would like to know if there is a way to save data entry time on the attribute info as well as have the database and drawing linked.
