This may be part of the myth that it really worked, but I remember those who did get it in a download said it printed in such a way that the entire set was hyperlinked so you could click on a detail callout and it would got to that sheet within the multi-page PDF.

That bit is true. It was pretty neat. View Tags became hyperlinks, so that the numbered bit was blue and 'live'.

It's just like the HTML image-based export Revit's been able to do forever and a day now, but was in a PDF instead.

Now that would be great and not just mult-page PDFs!

It worked to a point. It might not have been fantastic, but back then there was a very little choice of PDF writers. A lot of users found it to be useful.
So rather than fixing/improving it, it was pulled completely, which left quite a number of users without a simple and free way to create PDFs.

In a recent blog post we note that Phil Read seems to have found a way to activate the old Revit UI “through the back door.” For everyone’s information, Leonid correctly observed that the old UI code remains in the software to support our automated testing process, but it’s not the user interface for 2010 product. As Autodesk has previously stated, the ribbon UI has been created and tested for R2010 functionality. If folks decide to implement Phil’s “classic UI hack” then that’s their choice. But please realize that since we didn’t update the old UI nor test it for end users, those who choose to use it have to do so without support from us and therefore we don’t recommend it.

Tony,

With the greatest of respect, how do you reconcile your previous comments on the insidethefactory blog:

"......Another related topic is the request to reinstate a "Classic UI". We are evaluating this and the only thing I can tell you at this point is it would be a very large effort with many limitations......." , with your statement above?

I acknowledge that you went on to mention the support issue, but to lead with the: "Oh we CAN'T to that, it's WAY to difficult for us" which one individual has subsequently proven to be complete and utter nonsense.

Was this simply a convenient line to spin so that users would quietly accept Autodesk's determination to push a UI, which, by my reckoning less than 30% of users like, down our throats?

I also note that your post on the insidethefactory blog was, intended in your words to;

".....shed some light on a few topics here and hopefully regain a bit of confidence......"

For myself, I will, in the future treat all statements from Autodesk as mere PR spin.

Let me stress, that this is not about the UI per se, but rather how your company deals with it's customers.

Regards,

Ian

I have to say while Phil may have discovered something which I'd like to know how he did it, I'm glad he hasn't told anyone. Using unsupported technology which people would do would cause some major headaches, not imagining the lying suport "nah i haven't used the hack I don't know why the project has unrecoverable errors "

I just guess we'll have to wait for someone to spill the secret or for Autodesk to plug the hole, I hope the latter but I think Ian's point is valid it may have not been tested but it's there and it was made out to be a grand undertaking when all that is really needed is a hack and possibly some use at your own risk warning message.

If Security and Exchange Commission regs prevent Autodesk from being "prematurely honest," presumably those same regs prevent dishonesty after the release.

If Autodesk can be accused of influencing the stock price by discussing possible new features on AUGI, then posting misinformation on the Autodesk website relative to the 2009 UI would appear to concern their lawyers a bit more.

But maybe not.
