Revit 2010 will crash when trying to plot sheets with large images to PDF. Work around is to plot the image sheets using "Raster Processing".

Windows Vista 32 Bit.

thats odd, typically vector is the smaller filesize than raster

is the quality of the image important?
e.g. is it a 300dpi txt file or a 300dpi image?

The images on the sheet are scanned at 300 dpi (greyscale) and then placed on the sheet. There are probably about 6 of these images at about 1.5 MB a piece.

I don't know if the problem is with Adobe Acrobat Pro 8 or if it is with the new Revit. But, Revit crashes, so the work around is to use the Raster Processing in the print setup options.

File size must not be the issue... it just doesn't like the images I guess.

Hi Philip,
I have successfully printed to pdf with images attached to sheets with both Raster & Vector no problems at all.

Out of interest, what pdf printer are you using, it may be worth trying a different one.

Cheers,

Hmm, I was thinking about posting the same problem but have yet to come up with a solution. I've used an older version of Acrobat and the latest CutePDF printer, I've tried raster printing and vector printing and regardless of the setting or PDF printer my sheet crashes with a rendering/image file in it. If I take the picture out, no problems, the sheet prints just fine.

This is a file converted from 2009 and I never had any problems printing the exact same sheet. It has something to do with 2010. I need it to go away or a solution found because we always put rendered images on out cover sheet and they now crash anytime we try to print using PDF (we use a remote printer and they require PDF's in order to get a good print).

Thanks

Dean

Please post a Support Request on this...

There is a known problem with RAC2010 printing images to HP 500 plotters, I have filed a support request and the developers are looking at it. There also is a known problem with display of images in the print preview for multiple printer types (this may apply to all printers, I just know it applies to all of my available printers).

More information going to the developers will make their job of fixing this problem a lot easier. Thanks.

I have had the same problem regarding Revit 2010 system crashes with certain images especially if the image has been located on a sheet as opposed to a drafting view. What I have found out through trial and error is that Revit 2010 does not like jpg as much as it likes the larger BMP files. Unfortunately BMP files are larger than jpg files.

I have found that if you create a drafting view and then import your bmp images into that drafting view you can then locate your drafting views onto your sheets. Then you can plot normally to your pdf file. With this work around (what a pain) you can then plot to pdf or anything else without any problems.

No doubt this is a glitch which hopefully Autodesk will correct at some point in the near future as this can be rather inefficient. But for now at least your Revit should no longer crash because you have image files.

Hopes this helps

PS.

Once you do what was stated above, then set plotting to raster not vector. Unfortunately larger files will occur but at least you can get out of a bind until Autodesk address this issue...

I did submit a Support request but looking at comments to this post and to the other postings in AUGI this looks to be a very common problem, or I should say that there are a number of different problems as it relates to printing to PDFs..........................

I did take the suggestion to print to a DWF and then PDF it (see some of the other AUGI PDF problem postings). That does seem to work fine -- I can get my PDF with the large image this way --- and is a work-around for the time being but it takes quite a long time to do this two-step dance just to get one print. I hope the Factory figures out what is wrong and fixes it very, very soon.......................

How the heck are you guys doing a batch plot to PDF? I can only do a batch plot to DWF, but only sheet by sheet to PDF. I can either only do DWF 2D or DWF 3D.

This is a problem for me also and has been reported to support.

Autodesk - Printing as raster instead of vector is not an acceptable workaround due to the large files that are produced.

It depends in part on what app is creating the PDF "printer" that Revit Sees. By editing settings in that app (I've use Adobe Acrobat, and now PDF995) you turn off the feature that asks for a name each time, and you turn off the PDF preview, or showing it to you after the PDF is created. Either way, once those are set, you can create either 1 PDF with all the sheets in it, or separate PDF's that it automatically appends the view name to, based on a "prefix" you set in the Path. Only drawback, is you need to set a default location for the PDF's to always go to, typically your "My Documents" folder.

Make sure you use bmp file images and place them onto drafting views. Then place your drafting views onto your sheets. Make sure you have no images directly on the sheets views.

Then

Select the pdf printer
Select Combine File
Select the views you want in Print Range
Select Options and under print setup, Hidden Line Using: select Raster Processing

Thats pretty much it...

I have the same problem with an image file. I had to export to DWF. I will try a drafting view. AutoDesk seems to always screw up a good thing. This reminds me of Autocad 13.

I finally printed the sheet by adding the image to a drafting view. Thanks for the help.
