Volume between Surfaces

I have two surfaces and I have run existing ground x-sects on both. I already used a grading object to rough out my volume but I wanted to check it by comparing surfaces. When I try to get a volume between two surfaces, I get the no vertical exists message. Do I have to run a profile for each surface as well?

You will be working at or near the bottom of the Terrain menu.
Here use >Select Current Stratum
Name the stratum and select Surface1 and Surface 2
Then Define your Site and your sample increment (NxM grid)
At this point you will be able to run any of the three surface
volume calculations on your site.
