area of rooms exclude columns

why do room areas exclude columns? is there a way not to make it exclude columns?

Select the column, go to element properties, uncheck the box for "room bounding." This will allow the the room element to ignore the geometry of the column.

Note: This works with architectural columns. I didn't check with structural columns.

Did something change since 2009 about structural columns having an instance or a type parameter for room bounding? I can't seem to find it now.

In RAC 2012, the room bounding is still there for architectural and structural columns, as an instance property.

In RAC 2012, I have a Room Bounding instance parameter for Architectural Columns (under Constraints), but not for steel Structural Columns. I loaded the Concrete-Column-Round.rfa family, and that did have the Room Bounding parameter (under Constraints). Apparently it varies with the column type.

Well, the mystery has been solved. I started with the Structural Column template when this family was created. The template does NOT have room bounding as a constraint.

I am now swapping out the columns in my project.

Steel column profiles would be too finicky to analyze as a void in an area. Especially for heating, wind and lighting analysis.

That is true. But with Concrete Columns I felt pretty safe just starting with the template to get what I want. When we get the structural model we will probably remove ours but..... just had me stumped as to why my original columns would not be room bounding. That is one reason I did a screen capture here just to show exactly what I was seeing on my project.

I recently had to sort through a large Structural model and determine which columns had the room-bounding elements to turn that parameter off. Not very fun for 1000+ columns, I'd rather select them all and turn the parameter off.

Just curious - "Select all instances.... In Entire project" couldn't work for that?

If they hadn't made a bazillion different columns, it would've. Doing this selected about 8-9 columns at a time.

Try a 3D view - isolate the catagory - makes them easy to find.
Once you select all of one type - fix it - try hiding them in that view - makes it easier to find what you have touched and what you have not.
