spell check

I'm trying to do a spell check in ADT 2005. When I issue the command, I then select the text and then enter; almost immediately a little alert window comes up to say that the spell check is complete (even when it's full of spelling mistakes). In the options settings, the main dictionary is set to American English. Is my spell checker just lazy or is there a reason why it doesn't really seem to check the spelling at all.
