I came across this training material offered by a company called ProSoft. The course is titled "Creating Parametric Families in Revit Architecture 2009 exercise workbooks".

Has anyone used this book and if so, what are your opinions of its usefullness in learning to make parametric families?
Thanks,
Carl

Carl:
Actually, I've never heard of the book, but IMHO, it seems everyone who gets involved in family creation should just dive in. I don't think you'll save any time reading a book. Start creating, and ask questions on this forum. If you want, I'm sure a lot of people will step up to the plate and offer suggestions and samples of good family creation.
In fact, we've completely moved away from the windows and doors that come OOTB, and I'd be more than happy to post.

As an AUGI member you have access to some very good documents from previous AU's. Check under the Autodesk University link just below the AUGI banner. Unless you attended, or know someone who did, you are only able to get session handouts from 2005 or earlier. A great deal of additional functionality has been provided since then but the basic process of creating and structuring a good family have not changed in these years so these older docs are still a great starting point. If memory serves David Conant, Steve Stafford and Phil Read have contributed some excellent guidelines (apologies if I missed anyone)
I agree with Mike as well. Jump in and don't be afraid to break things. The forums are always available with some pretty generous and creative people to give you a hand.

One of the subscription benefits is complete access to the AU material going back a few years. If log in to your subscription account first, then log into the AU (there's a link on the subscription page), you can access (and download) the screencast and the data files and the handout. There is some excellent material there.

And if you are on subscription you can download the Families Guide. It's pretty detailed in telling you how to create families. 800+ page PDF. I'll see if I can find the link...

2010 version of the Familes guide will be published soon.

Burried? There is a direct link from within Revit. Go to the "?" on the info center. There is a link the the families guide that will take you directly to the page.

Well, there you go; it was right in front of me all the time. I was trying to find it without having Revit open and it wasn't that easy to locate.
