View Full Version : Tricky paint job...

I've modeled up a lighthouse, using the in-place family tool to create a wall object via the solid-->revolve tool. My problem is now applying the paint to the surface, which is stumping me because of the shape of the lighthouse.

The image below shows the gist of what I'm trying to do...a large diamond pattern on the face of a tapered-cylindrical tower.

Anyone have any suggestions or is this a job for Photoshop?

Try using the new massing/modeling tools, and create a curtain system
and "patterning" , with opaque curtain panels for the black and white
colored infill.

Take a look at this:

and other tutorials on that site............

cheers.

Interesting. I'm going to have to upgrade.

Since this model is already built (it's not just a simple shell, but it has quite a bit already built into it...voids, windows, floors, ceilings, etc.) I want to avoid rebuilding the entire shaft. Is it still possible to apply a pattern to the tower?

I'm inclined to say no--that's not to say it absolutely can't be done in RAC 2009.
But it looks like a huge challenge. You could maybe apply a large scale material
map that has a checker board pattern and apply it to the truncated cylinder shape?
Probably a lot of trial/error with that method............

I suggested the 2010 massing tools since they are newly designed to do
just this sort of thing, very quickly and easily.

In 2010, if the tower height, diameter(s) etc. change, then all the panels will update as well. You can even control the layout, size and shape of the panels, specify swept forms/mullions etc. Pretty powerful tools.
