I'm working on a project and we has some areas where the second floor extends beyond the first floor. Is there a way in Revit 2009 to have this show up as a Hidden Line? So far I've only found two solutions...

1. make the second floor an underlay, and trace the outline... this works but if something moves, I have to go back and adjust.

2. make the second floor an underlay, using the hide command turn off everything but the exterior walls... this too works but rather than a single profile line you see both sides of the wall.

thanks

You almost have it!
You need to Underlay the Level above, then use the Line weight Tool (the one that looks like a fountain pen) and make the Objects Line weight <Overhead>, or <Hidden>. If the roof/wall overhead moves - the line weighted object will move with it also. Also note the Blue Grips at the end of the Line weighted object - you can stretch them to suit the desired layout.

You can also lock the model lines to the underlay, so if the 2nd floor
changes, the lines stay with it.

You actually don't need to use model lines. Use the linework tool to change the lines from the underlay to <overhead>, turn off the underlay and the lines will remain.

This is something that we struggled with for quite a while until we actually used the <overhead> lines, which were apparently made for this purpose...

Also in general locking model and detail lines to model geometry has a tendency to break things.

Yep--even better solution.

One thing to note when using the linework tool. If the sketch lines 'change' (e.g. they are dragged, moved etc) then they will stay up to date. If someone 'deletes' the skecth lines then the link between the sketch line and the linework line is severed and the user will need to reapply the linework override. Small price to pay for the automatic coordination IMHO.
