View Full Version : Trim to Xref Entities

For some reason, I can't trim objects to entities in an xref. It works on my computer at work, but at home, it doesn't. I don't know why this is happening and I can't seem to find a variable in help that will toggle this behavior.

Does anyone know how to change this?

Thanks,

JC

Hi

Are you using the same AutoCAD version at work & home?

Is this occurring with all Xref files or just the one at home?

If just the one, could you please post so we can take a look.

Xref files that are ok! at work, have you tried these same files at home?

Have you looked at comparing AutoCAD settings between work & home?

If no, have a browse of the following thread (offers a couple of methods to help compare settings) -

This is happening in all drawings at home. At home I run Acad 2005. At work I run Acad 2004.

Thank you, I will try running a file from work that works fine. I think its a registry system variable, not a drawing system variable.

Any other ideas appreciated in the meantime.

As a temporary workaround, you can use the Break command and snap to a point on the xref object for the second point.

edgemode was set to 0. I set it to 1 and I still have the problem.

Hi

Can you please post an example here (ZIP file containing a Master Drawing & a Xref Drawing) that doesn't work for yourself at home so we can take a look.

Hi

Ok! when I download and Opened the drawing files you posted I got exactly the same results as yourself -> Unable to Trim to the Xref file ->

Xref file = A-1.1-DEMO.dwg
Master File = A-2.1-FIRST FLOOR PROPOSED.dwg

Within these drawing files the Base is not set to 0,0,0 in relationship to the WCS (Personally I always try to avoid changing the Base).

Within the AutoCAD Online Help File [F1] have a look at the Base command & the InsBase system variable for more information on this subject.

I found if I reset Base to 0,0,0 in relationship to the WCS then reloaded the Xref file I was then able to Trim to any Objects within the Xref file.

Have attached the two drawing files with the amendments I've made; hopefully you will find you can now Trim to the Xref file with these drawings.

<add>
The Express Tools command BTrim doesn't have this problem, it will work on your original drawing files.

PullDownMenu: Express -> Blocks -> Trim to Nested Objects
</add>

Mike,
Thanks for your help. Here's what I did to all of the files. First, I set the UCS to <world> then set the BASE to 0,0,0. Then I moved the items in the drawings to be where I want them in relationship to 0,0 and base. Then reload the xrefs and I was able to trim to the xref lines.

Now, strangely enough, FILLET won't work. I use FILLET quite a bit to clean up corners and now, it does nothing. The other strange thing is this: If you draw a line out in space somewhere and use the TRIM command and hitting <enter> twice usually trims the line to the nearest object that could be found. Now, it seems its finding phantom objects to trim to.

Weird stuff, any help is appreciated.

Thanks,

JC

Hi

Can you please post the new drawings (new location relevant to 0,0,0) so we can take a look.

AutoCAD is known to have one or two issues with drawing Objects and certain commands when the Objects are far from 0,0,0.

With regards the Trim command, may be have a look at the system variables EdgeMode & ProjMode.

Hi

I've Opened and had a bit of a play within all three of the drawing files you posted above.

I'm able to use the Fillet & Trim commands without any problems within the drawing files....

Could you please highlight some Objects within the drawings that you can't Fillet or are you unable to Fillet any Objects?

Also could you please highlight some Objects within the drawings that you can't Trim.

Have a good one, Mike

Some of the above strangeness looks like Lost in base from Bug Watch February 2004 (http://manufacturing.cadalyst.com/manufacturing/article/articleDetail.jsp?id=101463).

Oh, and thanks for the email, Mike. I expect I'll make good use of it.

Hi Steve.

No worries.

Just a minor observation / suggestion - Bug Watch on the CADalyst web site really needs it's own Search Facility.

I just use google advanced search, thus:

http://www.google.com/advanced_search

Find results
with all of the words [trim xref]
with the exact phrase [bug watch]
Domain
Only return results from the site or domain [cadalyst.com]

However, I agree that a built-in search facility would be nicer. I have made this suggestion myself in the past, so an email from you (or anyone else reading this) to editors@cadalyst.com would carry more weight than me repeating myself. ;)

Hi Steve

That is exactly what I do presently BUT!!! I found many results obtained via that method now link to CADalyst Pages that "Cannot be Found" eg -

RE: Dimension in paper space or model? (http://forums.augi.com/showthread.php?p=28864#post28864)

I believe this occurs due to the CADalyst web site having been completely updated and old links simply not updated to point to their correct new locations (if they exist) OR more worrying these old pages have been simply removed from the new look CADalyst web site (which I happen to believe is the reason on most occasions).

Please note I'm not criticizing you here, I will write to the CADalyst Editor and suggest a search facility be added to the Bug Watch section.

Ok, I figured out why I couldn't use Fillet. I had the trim mode set to <no trim>. When I set this to <trim> it's all good. Thanks a million!

P.S. How did I manage to get 3 dark green blobs? I've only been here 5 minutes (metaphorically).

 Mike

Yes, a whole bunch of old pages got the flick during the last-but-one major web site update. Anything older than January 2003 just isn't there any more, so I think about 3.5 years worth of old bugs went away. :-? I guess what you're asking for here is not so much a search facility but rather a Bug Watch archive. I agree, and made this point myself when the old page loss actually happened. Again, I have limited influence here, so input from readers to editors@cadalyst.com is the best way of getting this changed.

The list of available Bug Watch pages at any one time can be obtained using this list of fings wot I has writed (http://gis.cadalyst.com/gis/author/authorDetail.jsp?id=16222). Using that link, you can often get to read Bug Watch before it's announced. ;) As I write this, the Cadalyst front page points to September's Bug Watch, but my link gives you access to the October and November columns.

A very partial temporary workaround for Bug Watch readers in search of old bugs is available in the June (http://gis.cadalyst.com/gis/article/articleDetail.jsp?id=106195) and July (http://gis.cadalyst.com/gis/article/articleDetail.jsp?id=123135) 2004 nostagia editions. ;)

P.S. How did I managed to get 3 green blob thingies so soon?

Hi Steve

I wrote last week to editors@cadalyst.com concerning both points (plus one or two others) -

Search Facility to Bug Watch

I'm now waiting to see if I even receive a response....

It's a shame that thread is locked, because I would have liked to have responded to your "No offence to you guys over the pond but the "I" in AUGI stands for International" with "No offence to you guys in the northern hemisphere but the "I" in AUGI stands for International", just to complete the sequence. :p

I didn't see how the points relate to the blobs, not that it really matters.

On the subject of blobs, I will now use the dancing snowman blob thing, because I can. :Puffy:
