Is there a way to have Revit display the existing phase + demo? The only method that I can see currently by setting the current phase to "New Construction" and then setting the phase filter to "Previous + Demo". While this works for most objects, it does not work for rooms. We need to label our existing rooms in the demo plan for reference. So, I have been trying to get the following to work with no success:
Phase - Existing
Phase Filter - Existing + Demo
Filter settings = New (not displayed), Existing (overridden), Demolished (overridden), temporary (overridden)
The desired result would show the existing walls (outlines) with demolished items (dashed outlines). I would then be able to tag an existing room for reference purposes.
Any helpful suggestions would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Keith

You've bumped into a legacy phase and room issue. Rooms exist in one phase. They don't persist across "time" or phases as other elements do. Prior to release 9.0 rooms didn't have a "real" 3D nature...no real height or volume. In order to work with Revit MEP it was necessary to add those concepts. I think they stopped short of making rooms really work for us. We need them to represent how they really "play" in our projects.
I wrote the following on my blog (http://revitoped.blogspot.com/2008/08/existing-rooms-and-their-tags.html) about this August of 2008. It's a workaround but easy to do with a View Template and its reporting real information instead of "faking" things.
How can you get room tags to identify the existing rooms?
Overlay separate views on a sheet.
Create a new view assigned to the Existing Phase.
Using Visibility/Graphics turn off all Model categories except Rooms and their tags.
Now your view only shows rooms and room tags.
On the sheet that displays the demolition work, overlay this special room/room tag only view above the demolition view. A little bit of extra work but you get automatic display of the correct room information without resorting to "dumb" text and introducing possible errors.

I don't think rooms will every be properly phase aware, because of the problems it could cause. The simple scenario is two existing rooms seperated by a wall. If you demolish the wall in Proposed, what happens to the rooms?

Sounds like you are trying to do this:

I think we would have an option to "demolish" one of the rooms as we do with any other object.

Thanks for the responses. It looks like we will have to use one of the workarounds listed. I really do not want to create a Demo Phase, and the overlaying of views can be an pain for some.
Thanks again,

I've done both ways, and I'd have to say that the demo phase adds a little more control, but if you want the new + demo in another view, then it's a pain because it's not considered demo in the new phase - only in the demo phase. I would do the overlaying of views.
They could make rooms that work with phases. If you delete a wall between rooms, it tells you there's duplicate rooms. It could work the same way. Room separation lines can already be phased.
