My question is, who should do what?

Our MEP department the electrical guys are laying in the lighting but the Architects layed in the ceiling. (ceiling in one model, lights in the other model, both linked to each other)

Now we have some visability control issues with ceiling grid lines are cutting thru the lights in both Electrical model and Archictural model.

Which model should the ceiling be live in? Should the electrical model create the ceiling so the lights cut the ceiling grid or am I missing an option in the either model that allows the lights to cut the ceiling from a linked Arch model?

Who should do what?

Thanks

The Architectural model would keep the ceilings. when the MEP guys the model, they can add the lights to it, then you should link it back in, and turn off their ceiling. you can go thru VG and set Revit link to display as custom, and turn off or on certain elements.

I am going thru the same thing with our structural engineer. we started out with the columns and structural framing, once structural got it layed our correctly, i took ours out, and just linked in their model. i turned everything off except the columns and framing where needed. I can still align furring to the colunns and everything seems to be working the correct way.

Youre MEP team needs to look at the differences between using Element Hosted Families, and Face Based Families.

If they use Hosted, they will need ceilings in their models. They dont Compy Monitor, i dont think. Same with Walls and Hosted fixtures. If they use "Face Based" content, it will let them host it on the face of the Linked File (your) ceiling, wall, etc...

Thanks for the reply.

Everything you stated we are doing exactly. I guess my real question is.

The lights from the MEP model do not cut the grid lines of the Arch ceiling grid.

there is a 2x2 grid with a 2x4 troffer and the 2x2 grid line is showing thru the light.

How do I get the ceiling in the Arch model to recognize that there is a light from the MEP model there and cut the ceiling accordingly?

Thanks

Thanks for the reply.

Our MEP are using Place on Face. But the lights don't cut the grid lines.

I can see we are on the correct path, thanks to both of your replies. Which is good.

But I can see I am still missing a step or two.

Any more advise you can share.

Thanks again

I have found the answer for those who want to know

From the AutoDesk.com forum.

Revit does not cut the ceiling for linked models. This is something they are working on but for now it does not cut the model.

Solution:

In the light family create a new ref plane 1/8" above the level plane and then create a mask region on this new ref plane and align and lock as needed.

The mask region will not show up in the host model (in my case the MEP model) but the mask region will travel thru and show up in the Arch model. (MEP is linked into my Arch Model.) So the mask region travels thru the link and will mask out the ceiling grid in the Arch model where the ceiling grid was drawn.

I hope this helps.
