View Full Version : Disappearing Contours

hello everyone
i hope someone can shed some light on this one. i have received a file, from an engineer, that i would like to make some changes in. i "save as", and then begin my work. it seems that if i alter any of the contours, among other things, they disappear after a regen. it's driving me crazy. i try to do a little work, then save it, get back into the drawing, and everything looks just fine until out of the blue, regen and you loose linework. what's up with that?
thanks
drew

Hi
Are you working in AutoCAD or one of Autodesk's vertical products ?
Was the drawing "received from an engineer" produced using AutoCAD or of Autodesk's vertical products or some other CAD Package / Bolt-on ?
Can you please post the drawing file so we can take a look ?
Have a good one, Mike

Drew,
How about approach this from another angle.
Insert the engineers drawing as an exploded block
into a new file from your template.
If you can post a copy of the file here, or if confidentiality is
required forward directly to me fro review of the data, and file
details.

If you're messing around with contours you're probably setting them to elevations and there's probably a clipping plane turned on. Type 3DCLIP and turn off the clipping planes if they're on and then regen. That might work.

The user sent the file in question to myself and Mike Perry,
The 'solution' I employed was to not even open the original
(files from engineer) Inserted the drawing as an exploded block
and all was well.
Note: When I say all was well, I am not revealing that
the drawings were in model space, four sheets, two at different
scales of the same data in different places with title blocks
all in model space. Also the data was at some strange rotation
with relationship to both the north arrow (SSW) and the title
blocks were not parallel to the Top view.
The user is or has rotated the data, and is composting the
model data into a single XREF-able plan, and or creating
Layouts to create their as-built sheets.

Thanks guys... I kind of got around the problem with the Mike's help... we decided to flatten the drawing, because the end product didn't require elevations... and like Mike stated, the original drawing from the engineer was a total mess...
Anyway, it's working for now... I'll let you know if it freaks out on me again... thank you oh forum gods... I guess I need to use the forum more often... And a special thanks to Mike for helping me work thru the problem...
later...

Hi Drew
If you sent the drawing file to myself and used the E-mail address in my footer I won't see this until tomorrow at the very earliest (depends what the doctor says later today); have been off work sick since Friday 22nd November.

So if you flattened all the contours and it showed everything correct it probably was a clipping plane cutting off the view to elevated objects.

Hi
Now that I've looked at the drawing file "807_BLBEACONBM.dwg" that Drew kindly sent I believe the issue / problem is related to the drawing file currently being set to Perspective View.
If the drawing file is set back to Parallel Projection (Default Mode) I believe everything should be ok! (The Insert method as adopted by Michael is one method of returning a drawing file back to Parallel Projection).
Please refer to the following threads for a little more information on this subject (especially take note of any links within) -
