Anyone else ever have this happen? I know its not just in 2010, but i cant put my finger on it.

I have 6 computers all in the same Model, rendering different views. They all took about two hours to finish. Then i started going computer to computer to save/export the views. 2 of the 6 machines, you press the Save to Project OR the Export button, and get the following:

If you press Save to Project, nothing happens.

If you press Export, it prompts you for where, what file type, etc... Then when you say Okay, it doesnt export anything.

We've had troubles in the passed if the uncompressed image size breached 40MB, so weve been "butt dynoing" it to keep it lower, altering resolution and image size to keep us around 30 MB. But what gives? The journal indicates failure to write the png file, but doesnt list why.

All export types fail. JPEG, PNG, TIFF. Here is whats in the journal:

Support request to follow... My fifth one in a week. :(

on network licenses? I wonder if the problem with the license server "timing out" is your problem. But then it would be every machine....hmmm...:?

Annnnnnnnnnnnd i cant file a Support Request because i cant connect to the server.

You cant help but laugh when youve been awake for two straight days pushing for a deadline, and the House of Cards is falling around you, LOL... :)

Its not a license time out, i dont think. Even when they fail to export, they can still SWC.

I tried exporting locally as well, to rule out a network folder permissions issue, and no dice.

Oddly enough some people in the office say at times it wont let them export renderings, so they Save to Project, but theyve never been in 2010. Thus far, whenever this problem occurs (in the last hour the count increased. 3 of my 6 machines are doing it now) i can neither save to project OR export. AKA after 3 hours of rendering, its uesless.

Totally bummed. Ive got a wonderful SD Revit model, and a presentation due tomorrow, and five images set up waiting to be rendered in 2 different configurations. I am quickly running out of time and explanations. Right now 2 computers are running, and i just have fingers crossed they will save.

Its also not consistant. The machines that failt to save/export, if i SWC, get out of revit, and go back in to the same model, and render a quickie with **** quality and resolution, then it will export/save...

I cant find many correlations thus far. One computer has failed twice, on the same rendering, so it is now permanantly out of the rotation. Another computer finished that one just fine.

One machine failed tonight on a rendering at the exact same settings that it succeeded on yesterday. Truly baffling...

I hate to say it (without sounding too much like a sales guy  ) but this is where having just one copy of Max Design would SO pay for itself! Maybe just upgrade one Revit license to the new Visualization Suite. With one license of Max, all those machines could be set up as a render farm, and those stills would be done so much more quickly! FBX out from Revit, import into Max without worrying about materials or lighting or the integrity of the model, set up the five scenes, and que the renderings. Each image will farm bits out to the other machines in the render farm and the "main" machine will process the final images. You could have gone home hours ago....

Dont laugh at me.....

I have Max Design here.

Ive done the FBX to Max and had it Render wonderfully at home, but im not a Power User of Max enough to be able to control it the way i need right now.

Yeah, i couldve gone home hours ago.... But then again, if i wasnt having random Revit issues or random Hardware issues, i couldve gone home hours ago just the same...

Aaron, did you solve the problem ? If it´s not to late, you can send the .rvt to me, and I´ll render them for you. (I´ve got three quad core machines, which is just doing nothing today)

i have had problems in 2008 & 2009 with the same problem

typically it was b/c i ran out of memory and cant save.

yesterday, i was copying archvision families from one project to another, and revit 2009 ran out of memory and blocked the copy/paste feature. i closed 2 windows and regained copy/paste. revit is wierd about running out of memory and disabling features... especially b/c it does not tell you about it.

last week, i was rendering in 2009, and when the rendering was done (3-4 hours) it would not save, it would create view in file. so i had to close revit and reboot. i changed it to best @ 100dpi (from the best @ 150dpi default) did the rendering again and was able to save without a problem.

That's why I like AUGI! I wished I had time to help as well... or at least to come with a workaround to help Aaron out of it...

Sad to hear that this bug isn't fixed in 2010. This bug has been around for a while and the 2 machines that wouldn't save did run out of memory. It sucks that when this happens Revit just stops working, and doesn't give any warning. I reported this to support over a year ago, and they confirmed the bug.

Thanks guys, i REALLY appreciate the offer to help. Thats really kind of you both.

2 of the computers held steady all night, the other 4 were flickering with no rhyme or reason. Theyre all 32 bit stations, aside from one (the 64 bit station with 8 gigs of RAM was flawless all night).

Regardless, the powers that be have requested more changes to the model, so ill be starting over on Monday. WEre going to put it in Max and render farm it outside though, cuz this was too big of a pain.

Its still boggling me, becuase i would think if it were simply running out of memory, that revit would fatal error/crash/not be able to do ANYTHING. But i can model, edit, move around, SWC, reload latest, etc. I can do anything i want.

I just cant save a rendering, haha.

Has anyone noticed: "Presentation Foundation Font Cache" in the task manager when this error occurs.

It was using as much mem as Revit.

It wasnt in the task manager when we were having this trouble, because on all of the various machines we monitored the tasks and their mempry usage, trying to find a workaround for getting the renderings to save.

We came up short, on it. All hands point to it just being a limitation of the lesser workstations that shouldnt be rendering.

When they failed, we would literally duplicate the views, and cut them in to strips. Doing so lowered the overall size of the rendered images output. Once they got under 15-18MB images, the lesser machines stopped having trouble with the exports failing.

It was a lonnnnnnng night that way, and our post mortum meeting that we had on the situation declared that we just wont use those workstations for rendering anymore.

Has anyone solved this issue or know what the problem is?
Is it simply the final image size is too big for Revit to handle?

I am only asking because I am having this very issue right now.

Its not an issue to solve (at least, in our case). It was Too Little Memory. More RAM, or better workstations made the problem go away.

We DID find a sliding scale of "what image" was too big that would push it over the edge memory wise, but it was different for all the machines.

Time to upgrade. :)

Yeah, It is time to upgrade.

Not too far away now.

I am having the same issue using Revit 2010 so, What can I do to export the rendering? Has anyone got a solution?

This exact scenario just happened to me this weekend. I am using Revit 2011, and my rendering is only 20.4 MB (at medium resolution). It was the only thing running on my machine at the time I left on Friday. My computer exceeds (barely) the minimum requirements listed on the Autodesk website. It is a Dell Precision T3400 Core 2 Duo with 4GB of RAM running 32-bit XP Pro with plenty of free hard drive space. The rendering is complete and looks good, I cannot save it. It was just a draft, so it is not critical to keep, but I would like to if possible. Is there a solution? Also, if it is indeed a system issue, would an additional 4GB of RAM solve the problem? Without a lot of downtime an expense, how could I get the biggest bang for my buck? (Note the word "buck", not "bucks"!)

One emergency, last minute option, might be to do a screen capture. SnagIt is a great option. This would be a lower resolution but might save "the meeting" - having somthing rather than nothing.

Just throwing this out there for the next late night frantic search...

Additional RAM is what you need, but understand that it also means you need another Operating System. 32 bit Windows will not let Revit use more RAM.
