View Full Version : Structural Model - Revit Link - Controlling Visibility

Hi all,
I've encountered a strange issue, that I can't seem to figure out. Here is the situation: Two separate projects. Both projects include a Revit Link from a structural engineer. As far as I can tell, both projects are set up in the same manner.
We are NOT using copy / monitor at this time. Instead, we're just looking at the structural engineer's columns as an Overlay Link. Primarily because the structural engineer has made a lot of stuff out of in-place families which are not copy/monitorable. (Is that a word?)
Anyways, please look at the attached Jpegs. The cyan stuff is the structural column in the link. Notice how in one image, our walls "Win" over the structural column. However in the other file, the structural columns "Win."
I want the structural column to win, but I can't seem to control the visibility of it.
Any thoughts?
Thanks in advance.

You stated that you are not using Copy monitoring, but what is the symbol on the wall being "cut" by the structural column in the first image. Is it in a group maybe? There is something different, but it has not hit me yet as to what it might be.
Good Luck!

Were both of those walls present before the Structural Link? Revit absolutely cares about Order of operations, in terms of graphical hierarchy and linked files.
Im suspecting that one of those walls was present first, then the structural link came, then the other wall was drawn. The same thing happens if you have multiple links in the same area... Order of operations dictates graphical representation...

The first image is a wall... that was once a group, but now has been ungrouped. But any new interior wall I make, still "Wins" over the structural column.

Hrm... If that is true, I find that quite troubling... does that mean I have to delete all my walls and re-draw them?
One thing to clarify... the two images are from different projects, not the same project. The file where the walls "win" over the structural columns, they will do so whether it's an old wall, or a brand new wall.

Just a thought. I've found this issue before but have not yet found an answer.
Is one view a "Detail" view and the other a "Floor Plan" view?
In Detail views, structural framing/column/etc. seem to hide under walls while Floor Plan views let the structural be dominant. I find this is true regardless of the view's "discipline" setting.

I have a support request on a similiar issue. Mine has the same results as you but with Structural columns actually in the model, not linked. The same structural concrete column in one wall "wins" while in another the wall wins. Its a big problem for me right now that they don't have a solution for.

I have a very similar issue and would just like to make all elements of the linked model to be transparent... Doesn't seem to be possible.

Is the top of wall lower than the top of column when the column "wins"?
otherwise i would suspect draw order also. Remove the revit link, then re-insert it and see if that helps.

Structural Column families have a family parameter to "Show Pre Cut in Plan". I have seen this parameter cause issues like this. I don't know if this is the issue in your situation, but it's worth a try, if you haven't tried it already.

Hi Guys
Just came across this problem.
Has anyone managed to find a solution or work around for the issue?
(Linking a 2011 Structural model into 2011 Architecture and the walls are 'winning')
Cheers

We have the same problem, any suggestions? Regards, Dale

we just had this problem with a linked structural model. I checked the properties of the columns and the top offsets and bottom offsets were flipped (bottom was 73'-0", top was 0"). I tried flipping them and the columns started to show correctly - we are getting our structural consultant to fix.
