Modelling Extrusions from splines

I am modelling a column, and I would like to have some decorations extruded around the base. I have imported an image which I am tracing over with a spline. I get an invalid message when I try to extrude the sketch. Is it possible to use splines to sketch extrusions?

No, It should work. Make sure you have a fully closed line. At the ends of your spline use a small line from endpoints of both splines. You can't close a spline to a spline.
