I have a large 2009 file 170 meg +

After a varity of attempts was unable to upgrade on my Quad Core machine (3 gig ram).

"Low memory, etc."

Converted 1st time on Duel Core machine (2 gig ram),

Just mentioning it!

A lot of the times it takes a system with way more RAM than that to upgrade a Revit model. If you have a 64 bit workstation with 6+ gigs of RAM, try there.

Its not the processors that are havnig trouble, its the lack of RAM...

As mentioned elsewhere on these forums:

Rule of thumb

400MB file requires min. 8GB of RAM (available RAM--not tied up with other apps.)

So-- let's just say for fun that a 200MB file requires 4GB of avail. RAM

32 bit systems, even with 4GB RAM installed and 3G "switch" applied
still only deliver 3GB of RAM--so 32 bit Revit on 32 bit OS will not handle 200MB files.

The answer is the upgrade all workstations and server to 64 bit OS, and install 64 bit Revit.
Load as much RAM into each machine as will allow--min. of 8GB is a good place to start.

We are currently confronting this issue head-on, as we have several large projects
which will soon create memory errors with our 32 bit network.

Does your 170 Mb project have linked RVT files? If so, unload all of the links using RAC 2009 before upgrading. I have had similar issues with a similar file size, but I am running 6 Gb of RAM.

Please note: the duel core with less ram converted fine.

I believe there is an issue between Revit 2010 and Quad Core machines.

Hi ejc

Apart from finding that Revit is a little less stable if I have hardware accelerator on, I am not having any particular problems running 2010 on my quad core machine.

I am running Vista 64bit with 8gb ram with a q9550 chipset on a Gigabyte EP45-DS3P motherboard. ATI HD 4650 Video Card.

Cheers

I'd like to share a similar experience. I tried upgrading a 200mb file to 2010 on my desktop, a Core 2 Quad 2.4ghz (iCH9DO chipset) with 4gb RAM. Revit aborted saying it did not have enough memory. I was able to upgrade the file on an older dual Xeon 3.2ghz (w/ HT) with 4gb RAM. Both machines run Win XP Pro 32 bit. As a reference, most any processor intensive tasks run significantly faster on my Core 2 Quad machine.
