Scheduling compound or nested families

I have created some compound door-window combinations and would like to schedule the individual nested elements separately. Is that possible? am I just missing something fundamental?

They have to be set to Shared (Under Catagories and Parameters) in the Nested families.

Be advised, this brings on a few other rules...

Shared Families cannot have TYPE parameters driven by parent family parameters, so youll have to make the Parameter values for any parameters nested (length, width, height) instance parameters, then the parent family can have them as type parameters driving the instances.

Wow, it makes sense in my head, but i think that explanation stunk, haha.
