View Full Version : Re-joining split walls

By dragging the ends of walls away from each other and back, I have had limited success making them recombine into a single entity. This behavior is sporadic and I have been unable to figure out what makes the difference. Usually, they just join but remain two distinct walls.
The walls are the same type (I have even used the match properties tool). It does not seem to be affected by whether the walls were created separately or split. The workset and phase also seem to make a difference. Anyone else have experience with this phenomenon? I'm down to just a few walls that will not combine. I can use the linework tool to make the interior elevations correct, but I'd rather just fix the model.

They have to be identical in every way, Height, no modified profiles, justifications (core face / center / finish face / etc)
Basically if you drew one wall and split it with the very next command. . . .thats the status you have to get each wall back to before they will join.

Thanks for the tip, I had just the same problem today.

what if they ARE identical in every way and still won't join? I'm going nuts here.

you mean 1 wall split into 2 walls, and try to "join" back to 1 wall again? it can only be done by API.
should be on wishlist (already?)

Not true... Usually it is possible to just drag their ends apart and back towards each other (even slightly overlapping them) and they re-join. It often happens as an unwanted behaviour (say, if I they were split in a 3D view and I want to adjust them slightly in plan...)
But... not always... And that "not always" bothers me because I don't understand the reason... So I'm with the OP on that one... I would like to know the answer as well.

Right. I've been able to join some walls some of the time. I'm with you - this doesn't make a bunch of sense to me (yet).

right, split walls can be "joined" as single wall providing not much property change occurs like height, etc.
very limited, well, for total solution, API or factory.

Does the OP really want "one single wall entity" or simply just join two segments of a wall that had been split in two before, even if they remain as two segments but without the joint?
If it's just a simple join, just use Wall joins > clean join.

I don't know about the OP but sometimes I want the single entity wall, rather then a seemingly one length but made up of several pieces. And since Revit already behaves that way (well... sometimes) it would be good to know what is the rule to follow. I know about the requirement for the pieces to be identical but even with this sometimes the walls don't want to re-join. This (mis)behaviour is what I am talking about.

I do believe this is a newbie question and that is the reason I cant find anything more specific when I do a search.
From reading this thread I am wondering what is the practice when you have an exterior wall made up of different wall types and you also need to follow slope of roof? Does each segment need to be modified?
