i thought it was a brilliant move , i changed the label from "REF" to "VEND"....(in types and by just typing into the label....i loaded it into project and it still reads "REF".......?

Labels will read a parameter. Edit the label to see if the parameter it is reading is a type or instance parameter and which type of parameter it is (text, etc...) If it is a type parameter you can create a new type for the VEND.

In your case, if your family was already loaded into the project and was showing REF, if you edit the family, make the changes by just changing the existing type by adding VEND, once you load it back to the project, Revit will ask you if you want to overwrite the existing family or if you want overwrite and replace the types already there with the ones from the family. Just be careful that if you replaced REF to be VEND in the family, overwriting the type in the project will make all REF to become VEND...
