Can you tell me why you think you failed
For most general stuff, I only use extrusions and a reference line for angle control..pretty low key stuff but works enough.
Use generic model template to start.
I also use the OOTB downpipes and make the odd rainhead to suit.
Some people make some quite complicated ones for commerical work that are more or less true to the precise manufactured elbows, Y junctions and so on, which looks fabo when rendered or for picky inspectors or QS dudes, so its whatever your needs are, but seems silly to model what you don't need to..its all model overhead !!

I use a Column Family - Then Change the Family Category to Generic Components with a Downpipe/Drainpipe Object Style. This way i can use the great functions that a Column has
