how do you put a diameter symbol, degree symbol in the text notes? you can do this in the cad, but not revit?

Easiest way... goto your start menu and select run... type in charmap - this will run a little program that shows the characters available for each TTF. Select your font then find your character. It will copy to your clipboard and you can paste it in any text.

If there are special characters you use frequently, just copy down the "Alt+xxxx" keystroke codes to a sticky note and keep it close by. Then when you need the character, just hold the ALT key while typing in the 4 numbers.

Now is there a diameter symbol in the Character Map? Last time I checked there was not.

<ALT>+0216 = Ø

Jerry - All depends on which TTF you are using. That's why the charmap program is good to use.

ah missed that yesterday. It's actually a "Latin capital O with stroke" or some such thing. I saw a couple other Latin characters that looked close, but it did not list an Alt keystroke code.

And yes it definitely depends on the font. The Architext font we use doesn't have nearly as many characters available as say Arial does, for instance.

The Run > charmap was very helpful! Thanks for this!

I have a shortcut to the character map down next to the Start menu on my screen. Just create a shortcut and in the shortcut properties make the Target: %SystemRoot%\system32\charmap.exe and Start In: C:\WINDOWS\system32

New wrinkle. I've just started using Revit Structure 2010. I've been using the ALT+xxx method to insert my diameter and plus/minus symbols for a couple years now. Well, just noticed today that when I do it in a text note I get some sort of chinese (?) symbols instead. I still get the correct symbols when using them in the dimension text dialog, just not in text notes. AND....the chinese symbol is only visible when editing the text. When not editing it looks like a box and when you go back in to edit it, the chinese symbol shows back up and the font changes from Arial to Times new roman from the symbol to the end of the note. Something strange is going on.

Anyone have any idea?

It sounds like 2010 is using a TTF other than what is defined for the note. If that's the case, they someone was really stupid when they modifyed the program. I hope not!

The really strange part is that everything up to the symbols behaves normally.

I think you will find that the most recent release / bug fix / whatever has fixed this problem.

I'll have to look into that. You'd think since we waited so long to start using 2010 out IT/CAD manager would have installed thet latest build but in the 5 years I've worked with him I've been less than impressed with him so it wouldn't surprise me.

Not every font offers every possible character. Since charmap displays the complete set of available characters for each font style, you will know if your font has a specific character or not. I do what PatrickS advised 6 years ago on this very thread. I have a shortcut icon to charmap where I can cut and paste any character I need.

If you are using a windows computer try <ALT>+0216 = Ø :)

As was mentioned in post #5 6 years ago. :)

Just use a Danish or Norwegian keyboard! Easy! (it's an actual letter of the alphabet in those languages)

But seriously, here are the ones I keep handy, this is using Arial, Arial MS Unicode has many more. I know, O know, but Arial is standard here in Denmark

Raised number 2 = ALT+0178 = ²
Raised number 3 = ALT+0179 = ³
Degree symbol = ALT+0176 = °
and now one I myself don't need:
<ALT>+0216 = Ø

Yes, very good information.
