Symbolic lines: Cut vs Projection

What determines which type of symbolic line to use? I have seen numerous differing examples without explanation. Take a single door family for instance. In plan is the open door panel drawn with [cut] lines and the swing with a [projection] line? Are they "Door" lines or "Panel" lines? What is affected by each choice?

When a family can be cut (examine Object Styles, those with an editable Cut column can be cut) you have both cut and projection line weights to choose from. So it is your choice which to use. Do you want a heavier line or lighter when you see the line in plan?

Taking your example of the door the stock Single-Flush.rfa door has symbolic lines for the Panel assigned to symbolic line type Panel [cut] which means that it will display the heavier line weight assigned to that sub-category for doors. The door panel swing is assign to sub-category Plan Swing [projection] which is assigned to a lighter/thinner pen/line weight. This provides greater control over the appearance of these two related parts of the door graphic.

If you don't need any distinction between them graphically the there is no motivation to use different Object Styles or the resulting Symbolic Line Types.
