I'm trying to make an in-place family for some trim going around my building. I made an extrusion on the north side of the building, using the face of a roof fascia sweep as my work plane. Finished family. Later I went around to the east side and tried to make another extrusion, using a wall sweep on that side as my work plane. When I try to finish the family, it tells me "Elements can't be copied because they will lose their reference" and it highlights that wall sweep. Cancel is my only option. What is going on here?

"using a wall sweep on that side as my work plane".
I suspect this could be the reason?
Try creating a new ref. plan, or picking a different plane or line for the work plane.
cheers...

Well I picked the wall below and it worked, but then I had to dissociate the extrusion from the wall so that I could move it out beyond the wall sweep.
All I did was pick the face of geometry to define a plane. I don't see why the face of the wall sweep would cause issues.
