attach top of column to reference plane

Is there a way to attach the top of a column to a reference plane? Or better yet, is there a way to attach the top of a generic family to a reference plane whilst keeping the bottom attached to a level?

extend your column past the reference plane
using the "cut geometry" tool select your column then select your reference plane.
Now if you move the reference plane up or down your cut should adjust to suit

(note a few problems with this.)
1. If the cut plane is moved so much that it goes past the top of your column, your column will lose its association with it.
2. I'm not sure this will affect scheduled lengths as I am not sure if the length is recalculated to factor in the "cut"
