non linear / non parallel dimensioning

how are folks getting around Revit's linear dimensioning only in v.6?

You can use detail lines to locate the non linear points, dimension to them, then change them to invisible lines.

What about dimensioning in 3d space e.g. diagonally from level 1 to level 2 across room or along a space frame component without needing a reference plane ,a work plane and a model line with ends you can tab to.
