I'm sending a structural model to an architect. I have a copy of his model and did some tests, there a lot of things showing up that we don't want to. I can created view templates but if he has adjusted his since I received the model, I don't want to override anything he has. So how can I make sure elements in both model and annotation categories are off when he imports our model. Thanks.

Well, annotation will only show to him if he links your model and set the view to show by linked view. As per 3D elements, you can have them in different worksets, and ask him to not load those worksets when linking your model (when selecting the link, just beside the Open button, there's an option to specify which worksets will be loaded).

First, worksets are not for view controls. We have plenty of other tools to achieve that now.
Second, you should be able to control visibility from within your model by setting it to custom.
You should'nt have to modify his model unless some very specific issues.

1. Dont use Worksets. There are all kinds of issues that creep up when people try to use Worksets for visibility controls, and they usually dont creep up until late. Then its a buttache.
2. You dont have much you can do to AUTOMATICALLY make certain things show up a certain way for your architect, but you can communicate with them to see what they want / what you want to show, and do it accordingly.
For instance: We have FILTERS. Filters can turn off items by certain criteria, BUT... Filters in the arch model will not filter through to the struct model.
If- however- you set up a filter IN your model, and then apply that filter to a particular VIEW, they can use By Linked View to engage your Filter. This even works in views that arent parallel to the view THEY are using, as long as the view is the same catagory.
For example: Maybe you Copy Monitored a ton of architectural walls. You dont want them showing when they link, or theyll be duplicates. So you Filter them out (Filter by a field that makes sense... We use Type Comments or Type Name, since were big on naming conventions.)
Then make a Section that never really gets used. Call it "Section-Setup." Apply the Filter. Also shut off whatever catagories you want.
Then tell the architect to put their Section views on By Linked View: Section-Setup, and it will recall the filter and the catagory settings, even if the section is in a different direction.
This is all- of course- assuming they WANT you to do that.
But get over the notion of having to control what they can and cannot see. Youre sending the whole model, and if they want to, theyre going to see the whole model.
