Stacked wall - joins are strange

im just making a stacked wall the joins are not correct, it is drawing the walls butted together at corners....thus showing joint lines in elevations and floor plans.

is there some vital setting im missing?

as always, i seem to post then figure it out.

for future reference what was happening is, unless i draw all the walls in one command they dont join properly.
