These legends offer no control over font type, size etc and no way to control what size it is when placed.

Further since it's an annotation object it offers the buttons to send to front/back etc...but...if you try to put a different text object using the font you want...you can't get the font to superimpose itself over the legend. The legend RULES!

I'd like to see more user level control over these puppies!

I agree. These should have the same properties as other schedules / legends. On a tabloid size sheet, that thing is a monster.
