View Full Version : Moving project vertically... hundreds of errors...

Hello:

Our office is designing a 15 story office building. A decision has been made to remove 18" from the penthouse floor, and add 18" to the first floor. The net result of this is that floors 2-14 will "move" up 18" as a group.

When I attempted to implement this change by moving the project levels 18" vertically, Revit reported hundreds of errors, mostly about unjoining elements and invalid sketches, so I cancelled the operation.

I remember reading somewhere about a simple method to "move" a project vertically by changing the coordinates. Is this a "Shared Coordinates" action, or something different?

If the majority of the project could be left in its place, you could conceivable just leave the bulk of the levels where they are and just move the first level down and the top level up as you need them to do. If you're using geodetic for your level elevations then you'd be set -- you could just use Shared Coords. But if you're using Project Coords for reporting elevations to any great degree -- well, then this would be messing with that as your ground floor would end up 18" lower in Project Coordinates.

I would try turning off all model elements on the 1st and top floors in an elevation view, leave all levels on, and then select everything on 2-14, plus the levels 2-14. Then try to move all of that up. You may get a few errors, but shouldn't be as many.

I was working on a 40-50 story highrise last year that was constantly changing both number of floors and floor-floor heights. If everything is hosted off the levels you should be able to just move them like you did and only have a few errors to clean up. If you have a lot of wall openings or wall sketches that aren't tied to any actual level they could be staying behind causing your problems. Relocate project moves everything and redefines the shared coordinate system. How far along/detailed is the project right now?

It looks like shared coordinates is the way to go. With shared coordinates, I can adjust the levels for floors 2-14 to meet the new conditions w/o "moving" them, then adjust the top and bottom floor levels to match the new floor to floor heights. I still get some errors with this operation, but significantly less than if I moved all the levels.

BTW, I tried to manually move all items between the 2nd and 14th floors in one operation, but Revit won't allow it, giving me a warning about vertical and horizontal constraints.
