Is there a way to apply different materials for in-place masses without opening the "edit in place" work mode? It takes a painfully long amount of time to enter/exit the edit in place mode for us.

you could make a parameter for the material.

I tried that, but it doesn't apply the material to the solid form inside the mass.

Use the paint bucket....

Does that work for in-place items while NOT in edit mode? I know that material model patterns cannot be aligned to other objects unless you're in the edit mode.

Works when not in edit mode.
However, the align command doesn't work on fills done this way. (As it doesn't in other similar situations - which of course, sucks.)

The paint bucket works just great for this! Thanks... I always forget about this tool. :|

Another workflow we have used is to make separate Materials called "Mass-1"
"Mass-2" etc. and specify them when creating the masses.

cheers......
