Calling all Structural Reviters.
I am trying to create W-Flange beam family with a nailer running the length of it.
The geometry is no problem. However, when I load the family into a project I lose the "Specify Types" dialogue. (see attachment)
Is it possible to add the nailer and maintain the dialogue box?
Thanks

The only solution I could come up with thus far was:
Load all the W-flange sizes I required;
Edit the family, adding the nailer and appropriate parameters;
Load it back into the project.
Barring actually being able to select the sizes from the newly created family, I think this solution is reasonable until I have to add a new W-flange size to the family.
Any thoughts?

What size nailer and appropriate parameters are you adding?
Did you modify the txt file?

Hi Alan,
What is this text file you mentioned?
Thanks Scott

Look under Metric Library\Structural\Framing\Steel where the steel beams are and you will find a name.txt for most of the families because they have more than 6 types in them.
So you could add different sizes of the timber for different sizes of beams and add two variables for the timber say Twidth and Tdepth. Then add these into the txt file.
Looking at what you have posted the timber nailers are 50mm deep and the width of the timber is set to the width of the flange.

Hey Thanks Alan
I found the text file and all is well.
Great tip.

No problem....
I might create a UK UB family with nailers muself.
You have got me thinking, a lot of times I bolt timbers in between the flanges via a bolt in the N/A of the web at 600mm crs. It would be good to create a family with these already inserted.
Look at the posting about the X showing on section on timbers and place the X as that in the families above.
Attached is a U.B with timber nailer I created for anyone who is interested.
The timber size has instance parameters that can be adjusted within the project, and the U.B sizes are related to the type catelogue.
There is also an offset (instance parameter) to offset the timber nailer from the U.B
