View Full Version : How to get Wood Framing extension to work?

I have tried running the Wood Framing extension, to no avail.
I tried opening the Extensions Manager and running the Extension. It gives me an error saying that wood materials need to be loaded into the project.
I loaded several structural wood framing and column types under the Nominal Cut Lumber.rfa family. Tried running the Extension again, same error.
I tried selecting 4 walls with a Wood - Stud Layer core type, then running the extension. Nada. Same error about wood materials needing to be loaded into the project.
So how do I get this thing to work?
*edit* I bet it has to do with the stupid installer putting it in my Revit 2009 Extensions folder  I have a support request open now about it.
Manage - Materials - Physical Tab- Select "Wood" Material Type and then OK

I can get the program to work in a sort of a fashion but it models the wrong sizes for the frame.
For the test run of the extension, I chose a simple timber framed external wall with a core thickness of 90mm (timber stud) clad externally with Hebel power panel (75mm) and lined internally with plasterboard (10mm). Wall total thickness 175mm
Having selected the wall and the ran the Wood Framing Extension, the first thing I noticed was that the generated thickness of the core (and therefore the ultimate framing) was 175mm - the total wall thickness - not the 90mm core thickness as set up in the wall system family. This nominated thickness was grayed out and unable to be altered.
Once the wal is generated, you can alter the size of stud by selecting all instance and the manually adjusting it in the element properties. The resizing however still has the center line of the stud located on the center line of the wall wall rather that the center line of the core. When I tried to move it an error message appeared saying "Unable to keep elements joined" - probably the joining of the studs and plates.
Attached are some screen shots which shows the problems
Have lodged a support request - will post any answer I receive

Thats what I did and still get the error message to load wood???
...Also I'm a little confused of the term "wood" ? As far as I'm aware wood = tree or finish, not framing? So why am I having to load a finish?

Hi Ian
Try loading a Structural Framing Family Memeber in your project and then you should be able to select that for your timber sizes. It seams to work on my system.

I need to try that. Hopefully there's a way to set up some default settings because there's a TON of settings as it is now... too many to deal with, really.

Where do I get this extension?
I have downloaded and installed the *Subscription Advantage Pack for Autodesk Revit Architecture 2010 and the Revit Extensions for Autodesk Revit Architecture 2010, but I do not see anything for the Wood Framing.
Thanks
Does anyone know if the studs can also (double) curve?

Thatks DotheBIM. I am in Revit Architecture 2010 and go to Add-Ins and go to Extemsion Manager, I get Miscellaneous menu and Modelling Menu. Under Modelling Menu i get Grid generator and and Excel Based Model generator.
I dont see wood framing anywhere. Can you please take a screen shot and post here?

You need to install the file called revitextensionsrac2010_q3.exe... it is 296 MB. and you should get what is shown in the attached screen shot.

I highly doubt that... based on what I've seen so far, but what does a double curve stud mean? Is that like trying to similate some of the lumber you might find at Lowes or other similer discount lumber stores that has been laying out in the weather?;)

Is that in a different location? I could only find revitextensionsrac2010.exe
Is it labeled something different on the subscription page? or is it just me not seeing it in front of my nose.

I logged into subscription center again and It seems that autodesk has withdrawn revitextensionsrac2010_q3.exe file. Instead we only get revitextensionsrac2010.exe for download. Am i right autodesk? Can someone from autodesk team please let us know what is happening here? Thanks in anticipation.

Everyone:
Revit Support informed me today that the file with the "q3" suffix is incorrect. revitextensionsrac2010.exe should be the correct file.
I downloaded a file from the Support site at home late last night, and it gave me the option of where to install, although it did not show the correct location at first, and I had to manually create the Extensions folder in the RAC 2010 program folder  But anyway, I'm guessing that was the correct file, so I'm going to try it again today on my work machine.

usually, the studs are bended and laminated to get the curvature. I've done this on a small garage side project where the the timber curved in plan and the connection between the roof top and walls.
The image of the bridge you can see the wood curves in one direction and twist in the z direction as it travels upwards.

Oh sure AP -- go about bashing Revit because you're European and get to do interesting work ;-)
Your garage project looks like something Escher drew. Flat roof right? It looks like it's sloping towards the viewer in the screenshot. Very cool, BTW

For some reason, we do not have the wood framing extension or the content generator in our extension load. We have installed it twice and still do not see it.
Any suggestions?
