I have an interesting hip roof issue that has been bugging me, but finally fixed it.
I'm working on a building with a wing that is 54 feet wide. We are adding an addition that will come off of the end of that wing for 30 feet. However the addition is 67 feet wide, aligned with one side of the wing, and extended past the other side. The roof overhangs are about 3' - 1", so the existing roof is 60' - 2" wide.
To make the roofs over the new addition, I made one that is the same width as existing. It is 60' - 2" wide and 30' long. Because of these dimensions, I have to sketch the "back" side of this hip addition (side with no slope, to be extended to the existing roof) overlapping the existing roof.
For the addition portion extending past the other side wall of the existing building, I made another, smaller hip roof, but it's 36' - 2" wide and only 13 feet long. To make this work, I had to overlap this roof with the first roof a considerable amount, in order to make the join roof tool work.
For some reason I was having problems with the line between the two new joined roofs not going away, even after joining geometry. Also, when I placed a fascia on those roof edges, I had a visible line along the aligned eaves of the two roofs, where 2 fascia pieces were butt-jointed together. I tried removing one segment and pulling the other segment to the corner, but then those pieces would not miter properly.
I checked all the roofs, both new and existing. All had the exact same offset, set to Truss, overhangs, slopes, EVERYTHING was the same. However, when I zoomed in super-close on an elevation, I noticed that my 2 new roofs were, in fact, NOT aligned. They were off by less than 1/256" (1/512" maybe?). I used the Align tool to bring the smaller new roof up a smidge higher to align with the larger new roof. Both roofs still report the exact same offset value.
I did have to disjoin and re-join the roofs, but now all works correctly.
