starting to put these wall panel accents which are different shapes all around the house
currently I am just using a profile to represent the panel... but it is not hosted on the wall
not sure how to host these since they are random shapes on the walls
any suggestions

Hey there,
I would just create a reference plane where you want to work (ie: the back of the panel) and set that as the work plane when creating a wall panel like you show. You can either use a panel "wall" and then edit it's profile, or create a family in place using the sketch function in elevation where the depth is controlled by the family's depth parameter.
Good luck.

I like face based families for these type of details.

Looks like a wood slat rainscreen wall(?) I like to use curtain walls with mullions and no glass...

Absolutely! Great method for these types of geometry.
